The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this lovable family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
