The Former French President Set to Write Jail Diary Documenting His 20 Days In Custody

The ex-president of France will soon publish a memoir in the coming weeks called A Prisoner’s Diary, detailing his time endured in jail.

This news came less than two weeks after Sarkozy gained freedom while he appeals the court ruling related to unlawful coordination regarding a scheme to secure political financing linked to the leadership of former Libyan leader.

Life Behind Bars: Inner Thoughts

“In prison visibility is limited, with little to occupy time,” he reflects in one passage, suggesting the account centers around his musings while in seclusion instead of wider commentary of the strained and struggling jail system in France.

“Quiet is absent, not present in that facility, where one hears endless commotion,” he states. “The din unfortunately never stops. However, akin to empty spaces, personal reflection is strengthened in prison.”

Freedom Plea: Recounting the Hardship

At his release request hearing, the former leader had appeared via screen from inside the facility, characterizing his incarceration as exhausting. He stated to the judge: “I wish to commend those working in the jail, showing great humanity, and who helped make this ordeal bearable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“I never imagined at this stage of life, I’d be in prison. It’s an ordeal that has been imposed on me. I admit it’s difficult, extremely tough. It affects one all who experience it because it’s gruelling.”

First of Its Kind

He, who led the nation for a five-year term, was the first past president in the European Union and the first leader since WWII of France to experience jail.

Before entering jail he had said he planned to utilize the opportunity to compose an account.

Cell Library

It remains unclear whether he had time to read and critique the texts he brought with him: a life story of Jesus spanning two books and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the classic tale, a plot where a blameless person is imprisoned but escapes to take revenge.

Life in Confinement

The former leader was placed in isolation due to safety concerns in a cell roughly 100 square feet featuring a personal bathroom at the correctional facility located in the capital. Two bodyguards were stationed in an adjacent room.

It was stated that he consumed just yogurt during his stay because he feared prison cuisine could have been tampered with. Options were available to cook for himself yet he declined, according to reports. Unclear remains if he will detail meals during incarceration.

Defense Viewpoint

Sarkozy’s lawyer, Christophe Ingrain each day while he was in prison, told the release hearing security would be better outside jail compared to inside. “He has faced death threats, has heard screaming after dark and emergency responses in a neighbouring cell when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Case Background

Sarkozy went to prison last month following a French court sentenced him to a half-decade term for criminal conspiracy in connection with efforts to acquire campaign funds during his election campaign.

He denies wrongdoing challenging the decision, and a fresh trial planned for the coming spring.
