Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

In the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her US tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
