That Gruesome Cartoon Film Conclusion That Stays With Viewers

Among every mature animated films I’ve personally viewed, no other has stuck with me as much as the terror-laced ending of the graphically gory and deeply subversive film from 2022 Unicorn Wars.

Back in 2015’s, the Spain-based writer-director created a dark, bleak and often savage universe with a few small , forlorn hints of optimism.

While Unicorn Wars seems like it stemmed from an impulse to expand the medium even more, the filmmaker clarified that it was more an effort to communicate a widespread, multicultural message about “the common origin of every conflict.”

This theme is expressed through a group of vividly colored bears , openly inspired by a well-known series of lovable characters.

Maturing in a community centered on militarism as well as the war machine, numerous these creatures are consumed by killing the mythical beasts, thanks to a sacred text which states the bears they used to be rulers of the woodland, until the horned beings drove them out.

A few did not entirely bought into the propaganda, and prefer to sample substances or engage sexually outdoors.

In contrast to their gentle equivalents, these vivid animals have visible sexual organs , clear urges.

For one especially vicious, pessimistic creature, the bear named Bluey, the war with unicorns turns into a road to power — and especially to authority above his gentler, nicer brother the character Tubby.

This bear behaves aggressively and an obvious sociopath , and while horror overcomes his group and kills his teammates sequentially, he seizes increasingly power on his own behalf, via progressively gory, damaging approaches.

Simultaneously, these mythical beings are experiencing their own terror, in the form of an expanding, harmful creature in their forest.

“In the early stages, it seems like a comedy,” the director said. “But then it turns into a more intense and sorrowful film. And by the end, it becomes a scary feature.”

Unicorn Wars starts out similar to one of the most playful movies from an iconic filmmaker, that discover a mischievous joy in allowing animated figures swear, engage in violence, or engage sexually.

Then it turns into something more like a more grim movie from that creator, featuring progressively graphic violence and a palpable relation to genuine suffering of conflict.

By the end, it is an outright theatrical horror bloodbath.

The horror that makes the film an ideal spooky-season watch starts much sooner than that description suggests.

Unicorn Wars is ideal for the most dedicated gorehounds, for enthusiasts of intense movies who wish to view something they’ve never watched previously, and who can handle a narrative that pulls unflinching brutality.

See it with the lights off with no disturbances, and that ending will dig deep within you and stay with you.
