New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” he added. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

Authorities issued security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was expected to be a key part of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
