Educator Slain and 25 Girls Abducted in Firefight at Nigerian School
Armed assailants have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a educational institution for young women in the northwestern part of Nigeria, according to police.
The armed faction stormed the public educational institution for female students in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, police confirmed.
The assailants "engaged police personnel on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their dormitory, an official report indicated.
One member of staff was lost their life while safeguarding the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now receiving treatment.
Eyewitnesses described a considerable contingent of armed individuals, referred to locally as criminal elements, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to create fear.
Community members disclosed to media that the armed men then led a number of girls into surrounding rural areas.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "supplementary tactical squads, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is underway in surrounding forests and potential getaway paths.
In the last several years, schools in northern Nigeria have regularly come under attack for militant organizations, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.
The attack in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge plaguing the region, leaving families in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they anticipate and pray for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.
