The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had let in 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.
A Season Falling Apart?
Had their campaign coming unstitched, or did there exist a thread holding it together from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, but then he publicly stated that the management had not mentioned the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Rumours that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.
Lazio became as messy during matches as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it has been hard to ascertain if progress is being made or self-destructing.
Cancellieri's Unforeseen Return
At least one man continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He spent the last one on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were advocating for him to extend his stay temporarily. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad with no new signings.
He joined in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."
Finding His True Position
It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of the player's talent. Billed as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role.
