On the eve of his half-decade plus one year in charge, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his future at Arsenal is directly connected to achieving success.

Reflecting on: From Appointment to Present

Arteta was appointed on 20 December 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup triumph within months. Yet, that first major trophy remains his only significant piece of silverware following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Yes,” Arteta responded when questioned about remaining in charge after his current deal. “However, it is about today. And numerous factors have to happen in the coming months as well to warrant that continuation.”

Saturday night brings the anniversary with a match versus Everton, the identical team Arsenal met the day after his hiring was confirmed.

League Position and Pressure

With second-placed Manchester City set to face West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal face being knocked off top spot in the Premier League before their own match begins. This situation arises even with Arteta managing a squad that has endured more than a century of fitness issues since the start of last season.

Arteta is tied down by a year and a half left on the contract he inked in 2024, but is acutely aware that results must come promptly.

The Manager's Mandate

He went on to explain, emphasizing the daily requirement to validate his position. “I think a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you communicate, how you step into the dressing room, the signal you send.”

Arteta continued, expressing gratitude for the consistent faith from the club's ownership, while singling out the players' commitment as paramount. “Ultimately, the key individuals are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, hunger for knowledge and give their all to the team.”

Injury Concerns

Arsenal approaches the weekend fixture managing a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a strain that is likely to sideline him for several weeks.

A Different Club

Even with the fitness woes and the high-stakes environment, Arteta feels the club's “priorities and messaging” are profoundly distinct from when he initially took over.

Arteta highlighted the record-breaking achievements as a sign they are nearing their goal. “You look at the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the caliber we've reached.”

In closing, the manager stated, “That is a level that the Premier League has not witnessed in the past. And we want to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
