Back in 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured I would book a place to stay after getting there, but once I got there, a major event was happening and every single backpackers hostels and cheap hotels had no vacancies.

Coming from Singapore, I thought perhaps I could spend the night at the terminal – but soon learned Canberra airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes around the clock. Unsure of how to proceed and feeling increasingly desperate, I caught public transport and began walking in the direction of the casino, believing it was a place to spend the evening in a place that stayed open all night. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition for nailing an interview the next morning, yet, as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

We could all use more people who show such kindness.

I must have looked lost because a woman noticed me walking aimlessly through the city and asked if everything was alright. I shared the story of my accommodation crisis and right away she offered I could crash on a spare mattress at her university residence at ANU – which was perfect, as that’s where my interview was the following day. She even offered some food: one sandwiches she had from her work shift. This gave me the bathroom and a secure location and secure to spend the night.

Looking back, it’s clear to me the enormous leap of faith she accepted being a woman inviting a male stranger who was a complete stranger stay in her room. At that time I existed within a bubble of male privilege and did not consider to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I am astonished she took that chance – and remain deeply appreciative.

Ultimately, I did not attending that university, and I never saw her again, but her act remains etched in my mind her selfless deed of human compassion. I hope the universe has returned her generosity abundantly. Our society requires more folks with such compassion.
